my hunt for non-sticky sunscreen
For more than ten years, I have been trying out sunscreen of different brands. Let me recall: Lavera (organic), Dr Hauschka (organic), Dermalogica, California Baby (sample size) and few other ‘unforgotten’ brands. Also known as known as sunblock, suntan lotion) is a lotion, spray or other topical product that is supposed to protect the skin from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation. While sunscreen does reduce sunburn and other skin damage, the use of sunscreen causes an increased risk of skin cancer. I’m pretty particular about that after knowing that too much of the sun’s rays can worsen my brown spots and freckle problems and I regret that I’ve only discovered this in my early 20s
After all these years, I haven’t been too pleased with all the sunblocks I have accumulated in my house since they tend to cause an oily shine on my face and leave a sticky feel. For those who have combination skin, you can understand how it feels to have that oily T-zone and it gets worse in a tropical climate. The one that scored best so far in my collection was the Dermalogica one who came in a tiny bottle but the texture was nice and light. But at that time (seven years ago), the Dermalogical Solar Defense Super Sensitive FaceBlock SPF30 was selling at around RM150 for a 50ml so after a while, I stopped buying it as it was getting expensive. I believe it’s currently retailing online for USD$54 now. Shop StrawberryNET.com
Then few months ago, I was introduced to the La Mer - the SPF 18 Fluid which took me a while before giving it a shot. To me, it is an expensive indulgence as it costs $65 for a mere 50ml, and it’s probably the mostly costly sunscreen I have purchased! But since I was told that the texture is silky and smooth and most importantly, does not leave an oily shine to the face. After trying out for only a week, I am totally impressed with the light and silky texture. Most of all, my face doesn’t feel sticky and ’sweaty’. From the website of La Mer…
Designed for daily use, this water-borne formula absorbs instantly into the skin to provide broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection. A trio of natural and sea-derived ingredients uniquely benefit the skin. Gemstones absorb light energy, transforming it into beneficial green light to enhance anti-oxidant activity. Photonic spheres within The SPF 18 Fluid redirect and diffuse light. Smart, light-reactive seaweeds impart natural humectant properties to bind moisture - preventing dehydration.
