when life takes a turn

We can’t stop it when life takes a turn. I was reading a story about someone who has achieved great success in his life as a crafter after turning away from a life that almost destroys him.Whenever I hear of someone whom I care about that has gotten into alcoholism or drugs, I feel sad seeing them hurt themselves in such a way. Normally this can be overwhelming for everyone involved especially those surrounding the person and their loved ones.
