britney spears, donald trump and elvis have their own sunglasses

As an attention-getting accessory or fashion statement, designer or custom sunglasses are nothing new. Trendsetters like Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and Elton John sported designer and custom sunglasses as part of their “look” or star status. Some have worn sunglasses to hide behind, cover their drug-affected eyes, or make a statement. I read that Elvis Presley had sunglasses custom-made for him with his initials or the letters TCB (Taking Care of Business) built right into the nose bridge. Interesting!

jewelry and objects by simone walsh

Handmade stuff always captivate me, whether it’s made of sterling silver, fused glass, recycled metals, wool, scraps of fabric, gemstones..etc.  I came to know about the works of Simone Walsh via Moose: Art for Living and this cool gal specializes in a variety of metalwork techniques, including often very detailed sawpiercing, etching, repousse, casting and more. Simone resides in Australia and besides being a very busy graphic and web designer, she has participated in too many art and design exhibitions all over Australia, which you can read more about in her website. To give you a peek of her creative works, here are few of them…

charm for life bracelet

I’m not one of those who replenish new issues of women publications on a monthly basis. As a believer of saving the trees, I have opted to read fashion news online and an occasional purchase of a magazine when I need to keep myself occupied on a vacation. I get my printed fashion news when I’m in a hair salon, a cafe or anywhere else with a good stock up of magazines.

Anyways, I was drawn to the true facts of cervical cancer in the latest issue of Bazaar (not sure which edition), caused a type of virus known as HPV. Do you know that 80% of women would have the HPV virus by the time they reach 50? To raise the awareness of cervical cancer and HPV, renowned jewelry designer, Carolyn Rafaelian of Alex and Ani has joined forces with Merck & co to launch this set of beautiful Charm 4 Life bracelet set. The charm features a Chinese peony which symbolizes feminine beauty and reproduction. I’m not sure if you have seen a Chinese peony in full bloom but it is a captivating beauty of its own and in this case, it’s a symbol of peace. Available in russian gold and russian silver finishes. Buy it at the website of Alex and Ani. ($32 each)

colourful fused glass

If colour is your name and you love the vibrant hues that reflect your mood and style, then you gotta check out the gorgeous fused glass jewelry at Amy Burhoe. This is the brainchild of a husband and wife team who handcraft each piece of colourful jewelry in their home studio in Rhode Island.

But first, let’s understand what fused glass really is. From the website of Amy Burhoe, I gather that it is actually layers of glass melted together using a kiln which is a specialized type of oven. Many techniques can be used to alter the glass and the process can last anywhere from 6 to 24 hours! At the peak temperature (usually around 1475 degrees!) the glass is molten red. All I can say is I am totally melted away by some of the awesome colour combinations – they are just so pretty!
